Facts about pet licenses

Licensing your pet is the law. County law states that animal owners must register their cats, dogs, & ferrets that are four months of age or older with a county license (Marion County Code, chapter 4, sections 8-9). If you don't have a license for your pet, you could receive a citation & a fine; beginning at $100.

Licensing your pet helps it find its way home. The county license acts as a secondary form of identification in case your pet becomes lost or injured.

Licensing your pet helps keep it safe from disease. The county license is proof that your pet has been vaccinated against rabies, keeping your pets and others safe from disease. Indoor-only animals are not exempt from the licensing law.

Purchase a license

Pet licenses can be purchased online, in-person at our shelter, through the mail, or at participating veterinary offices (up to a $10 additional fee may be charged.)

To make a purchase through the mail, please send the pet's current rabies certificate & a check made out to MCBCC. Please verify your address, email address & phone number on the certificate is accurate.

⁴ Licenses will only be issued to Marion County Residents. Unless listed otherwise, no license will extend beyond the expiration date of the Rabies Vaccination on file at the time of purchase.
⁵ Valid until pet receives Rabies Vaccination or reaches/our months of age, whichever comes first.
⁶Any cat or dog with a microchip currently registered with a microchip company will receive a $5 discount per year.
⁷Refund of intact license, to price of sterilized license, will be issued if proof of sterilization is provided within 30 calendar days of license purchase date.
⁸License Fee reduced to $30 for one-year duration or $90 for three-year duration with proof of Medically Exempted Sterilization provided by a Licensed Veterinarian or Breeding animal owned by currently permitted Hobby or Commercial Breeder, in good standing.

Renewal

Animal Services will send reminder cards when it's time to re-license your pets.

Proof of current rabies vaccination

Pets must have proof of current rabies vaccination. You may obtain the vaccine at any veterinarian office, vaccine clinic, or at our shelter on Wednesdays.

We’re pleased to announce extended rabies clinic hours at MCAS to better serve our community, effective immediately (staff permitting):

Tuesday – Friday: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Saturday: 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Clinic hours are subject to veterinarian availability.
Peak wait times are typically between 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM, so plan your visit accordingly.
